" Natural Ventilation in Traditional Courtyard Houses in The Central Region of Saudi Arabia ".
|
|
Traditional houses in Saudi Arabia were built with three main points paramount, privacy, the segregation between man and woman and response to the hot climate. The privacy for those inside the house should not be invaded from outside, and also segregation was needed between the family and the guest inside the house. Traditional houses used natural means of achieving comfort such as natural ventilation and lighting. Saudi Arabia has five different regions, each with a different climate and type of traditional house, as discussed in Chapter Three. But each house type in these regions has a different way of dealing with the climate to the benefit of its occupants. In a hot dry region the employment of natural ventilation along with the use of thick walls in a house will make it thermally comfortable. In hot humid regions large openings will allow more air to pass through the space. In the desert, tents provide protection in the form of shading against the harsh climate. This chapter will discuss the main strategies for natural ventilation in traditional houses in Saudi Arabia. |
